Monteverde: can everything be uphill from our hotel?

Wednesday, Feb 15

We arrived in Monteverde around 11am.  We knew we were close to our hotel but we were a bit early and looked up the looooooooong hill and decided to stop for a coffee at Don Juan's coffee shop.  And have breakfast.  We asked our waiter where Mari's B&B was,  just another 100 meters up the hill, the loooooooooooong hill.  Fortified with coffee and fruit/eggs, we continued our climb, with full packs.  It really wasn't far as we discovered when we walked back down, sans packs but it felt very far on the way up.

Our room wasn't quite ready when we arrived so we took the time to look over the tour offers in the area and decided on a few.  We are here for four day/nights.   We spent that first day just wandering around and checking out the gift shops.  We mostly restrained ourselves although Val did buy a shirt.  We ate dinner in some side road soda which was as cheap as we could find in town.  It's a nice little town, basically seems to exist for tourists, shops, restaurants and tour offices.

Don't ask me to explain that phallic
towel construction.

The next morning we had a 6:30 start for a bird tour.  Lots of birds.  A green toucanet.  Another big toucan, some little stuff, a motmot or two.  I was the only real birder in the group, the rest of them wanted toucans and only toucans, and maybe the motmot since it was pretty.  I wanted to know the stupid little brown birds.

We got back to our room fairly early, before lunch so we decided to head uphill to see what was up there, in the other direction from town.  Not much.  But we found a restaurant for lunch and a bakery to pick up some bread to eat for dinner.  Back to our room to wait for our next event, the night tour.

Another night tour.  This time we saw a kinkajou (I don't know what that is but it looks like a cross between a monkey and a cat), a sloth that was coming down his tree for his weekly poop and got so close we could probably touched him, and an armadillo and some random frogs and snakes.    It was also completely uphill.  Who knew if you visit a place named for a mountain, it would be hilly.

Brilliant Frog (who is brown so we assume he
must be very smart)

I am going to leave it there because the next day was pretty full and there are lots of pictures to post.
